What is meant by genomics?
It appears that nearly half of all human genes are expressed ("turned on") selectively within the brain, and a great challenge for the 21st century will be to understand how, when, and where these brain-specific genes function. The Brain Research Centre program in genomics focusses on which genes are expressed and mis-expressed in normal cells compared to cells that are involved in brain diseases. Understanding which genes are "turned on" or "turned off" selectively is important in understanding the processes by which brain cells regenerate and degenerate, age, and modify their connections with other cells.
